Apprenticeships for Learners

Maybe you’re finishing school or college, or perhaps you’re already in the world of work and looking to develop your career and further your skills and knowledge. Either way, our apprenticeships will set you on the road to success.

Higher and degree apprentices split their time between university study and the workplace and you are employed throughout – gaining a qualification which could be a full bachelor’s or master’s degree while earning a wage and getting real on-the-job experience in their chosen profession.

We work closely with employers to create bespoke, relevant education programme and provide award-winning teaching. We offer a variety of higher and degree apprenticeships across different sectors including leadership and management, health and social care, engineering, data and digital.

As an apprentice, you'll learn and earn full-time with a salary. Tuition fees are paid for by the sponsoring employer through the apprenticeship levy.

Why Herts?

Our approach to apprenticeship study is flexible and we’ve adapted our teaching approaches to ensure there is face-to-face learning on campus, work-based projects and independent study. Assessments may include a mix of coursework, presentations, exams and practicals. Your employer will allow (up to 6 hours) of your time to be dedicated to off-the-job training and learning every calendar week. The delivery pattern of teaching could be day-release or block delivery depending on the programme of study.

We're dedicated to supporting all students at Herts. With the challenges of balancing work and study, our robust support services are here to help, ensuring every student gets the assistance they need to thrive.

We have been awarded an overall 'Good' by Ofsted across all of the key categories of quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership & management (Ofsted, 2024).

How to apply

You may be about to leave school or college and looking for an alternative route to a university degree or are mid-career and looking for a new direction. Regardless of where you are in your career, the first step is to secure a job with an employer that offers an apprenticeship programme.

To apply for an apprenticeship, you must be employed full-time by an employer who is willing to support you throughout the apprenticeship. Since apprenticeships are work-based learning programmes, your employer will cover your tuition fees and help you apply and develop your learning in the workplace. Therefore, your employer and job role must be relevant to the chosen programme.

Steps to apply

If you are currently employed:

  • discuss your interest in an apprenticeship with your Line Manager or HR Department to see if they are willing to support your application
  • if your employer agrees, they will need to complete this form. A Business Development Manager will then contact both parties with more information about the next steps.

If you are not currently employed in a suitable role:

  • our partner employers list apprenticeship vacancies directly with the University of Hertfordshire. you can see a live list of vacancies below. You can apply for an apprenticeship using the process outlined.
